Would you trust a nutritionist who was morbidly obese, at least 200 lbs over weight?
That is exactly what happened to a friend of mine. She failed the controversial four hour fasting glucose test. Of course, with all that blood they drew and all the time she was in the office, they never bothered to check her B vitamin levels, nor did they do a diet survey. In short, she failed the test, but they did not know or address the cause. So, they sent her to a diabetic clinic. The dietician was about 200 lbs overweight and nursing a super sized coke.
Then, without a food diary log or nutritional analysis the dietician proceeded to tell a gestational diabetic how to eat.
No more than 2 oz of protein a meal.
Avoid all fresh fruits, but canned fruit in no sugar is better.
No to most veggies except Romaine and one other.
No caloric liquids including milk.
Anything with aspartame and splenda was fine.
When asked about brown rice, she responded to avoid all rice. Brown rice has been known as a diabetic’s friend.
When asked about white or wheat bread, she told them what ever your preference, it does not matter.
Where did this dietician receive her training?
My friend was trained as a nurse, has been an ER nurse, but was not trained in nutrition. However, she had red flags going up all over the place.
My friend came home and searched the internet and found a study in the British Medical journal where they supplemented the women with 100 mg B6 a day for 2 weeks, 85% of the women no longer had gestational diabetes, for the rest of their pregnancy. B6 does help with glucose tolerance. This makes sense since during war time when grains were not refined, maternal diabetes almost completely disappeared. Grains are high in B vitamins.
So my friend opted for B6 and immediately her blood sugar dropped to 79, which is low. After a few days of her blood sugar not rising from food, she did an experiment. She ate two tablespoons of frosting. She said she had to gag it down. Seriously it cannot be any worse than the sugar solution they had her drink! Her blood sugar was 84, still low.
By reading about the study applying wisdom, she was able to bring her blood sugar under control withing 8 hours!
B6 also helps magnesium. Magnesium performs over 350 different metabolic processes, including carbohydrate metabolism. The average American gets less than 1/2 the dietary magnesium as their bodies need. When women are pregnant their need for magnesium nearly doubles. Of course, whole grains are a great source of both. When we refine grains we lose these needed nutrients. No wonder we are seeing more women with gestational diabetes.
A few weeks before this incident, my friend went to the nurse midwives and they said her blood pressure was twice what it should be and that the ultrasound showed she had a kidney that was enlarged and with very little blood supply. Onset of toxemia and a kidney infection! What did they do for her? They told her to avoid salt and did zero for the kidney. Her kidneys were not processing fluids. She came home and I showed her about Dr. Thomas Brewer’s work. We have known for over 30 years what causes most toxemia and it is usually preventable through diet.
She chose to eat some salty food, got some quality protein and dropped her blood pressure to normal that night. She also drank pomegranate/cranberry juice. Her kidneys began functioning within hours.
So, I ask where are the dieticians that promote a healthy diet for pregnant women, one that provides the nutrients mom and baby need? Yes. Unfortunately, it is not standard practice to give this information. 75,000 women die worldwide, every year from Toxemia.
Here is a link to information about what we know about Toxemia and Dr. Thomas Brewer’s successful Blue Ribbon Baby diet.
I feel it is unconscionable to know what we know and not be helping pregnant women know the why and how to prevent these insidious problems.
