Donna's Journey

My journey is only beginning

Conference Saturday 31 March 2007

Filed under: Daily Conversation — Donna at 1:41 pm on Saturday, March 31, 2007

I woke early today to ready myself for our drive to Salt Lake to attend General Conference with my daughter Julia. A dear friend Pana had taken ill on Friday and had given her two tickets to us. Julia first asked a friend, but the friend had other plans, probably conference bookended with study. It was probably a good thing he did not go, as we were gone for 6 hours, and that would have eaten into his important study time. I was glad to go with Julia. We sat on the east side about 7 rows up from the main floor. Though I took copious notes, my real study will come when I can start downloading Conference off the Internet, and then reading, pondering, underlining, and applying. It was powerful to sustain the living Prophet, his counselors, living apostles, and other leaders of the church, in their very presence, and to sing “We Thank Thee Oh God for a Prophet,” with over 20,000 others. When they released the Relief Society Presidency and the first and second counselor in the Primary Presidency, I leaned over to Julia and said, “they are going to call Julie Beck to be Relief Society President of the church.” It had struck me the previous week, when she spoke that she had changed, and then at conference, I realized why. That they did.

After Conference, we crossed the street to Temple Square, there were many street preachers, shouting at Conference goers, and carrying signs. There, along the sidewalks nearing the entrances of Temple Square, were lines of students with their hymnals, singing hymns of ZIon in the midst of the loud street preachers. It was not in their message that peace came, but in the sweet voices of youth singing hymns. We entered Temple square and viewed the newly refurbished Tabernacle. On the steps were a choir of Sister missionaries singing hymns with sweetness. Then Julia and I went to the church art museum and viewed the Tabernacle exhibit and paintings of Zion. We got to the car and headed home by 1230. It took us 30 minutes to go two blocks. We arrived home in the middle of Elder Packer’s talk, to find my son, his wife, and my grandsons were joining us for Conference.

Afternoon Conference was full of reminices of conferences past, held in the Tabernacle. As I listened, I too reminiced. When I was in college at BYU, we would rise early and stand in line for hours, hoping to get into the Tabernacle. I remember my second year in college going to Temple square and getting into both sessions. It was a particularly cold and rainy day, people went home to watch Conference on TV rather than stand in the weather. I was able to walk in on the main floor, and find a great seat. I remember vivdly my first Conference while at BYU. That was the conference that President Monson spoke to the girl in the balcony, Oct 2005. Conference has been a tradtion for us. My first Conferences when I joined the church in 1973, were broadcast to Hawaii and we rose at 6 am to watch it.

After conference we enjoyed a family dinner together, with those living at home, my oldest son, his wife and two sons. After dinner Julia, Jennifer, Mary and I headed to Provo for Julia’s roommate’s bridal shower. There had to be close to 40 people there, to celebrate with her.

When I came home, Roger and I took a long stroll, 1.5 miles, and discussed many things we had epiphanies about today. I came home and uploaded a pile of temple cards, into my PAF file, all waiting their sealing. This we will take care of when Julia returns home for the summer. I cannot wiat to be sealed to my parents, as I have waited for this blessing for 34 years.

I was able to visit the rest of the ladies I visit teach, this morning. Yes, we can be and instrument in God’s hands, when we write down epiphanies, and spiritual impressions, and act on them. We have more impressions with we show we are open to the Lord’s will, by not just asking, but seeking.

At 1:00 we headed to the Mt. Timpanogas Temple, to join Julia’s roommate, as she received her endowment, in anticipation of her temple marriage, at the end of April. What a beautiful experience, she was radiating. This roommate is four years younger than Julia. I can imagine what Julia must be feeling inside. Joy for her roommate, yet bittersweet. She knows the Lord is preparing a man for her, yet the wait is not an easy one.

This evening after leaving the Temple, Julia and I dropped dad off. Then we headed to Provo, for the second day of formal shopping. This time we went to Walker’s and up stairs to the evening wear and sales rack. There, I found the dress that God had inspired someone to create for her. Not trendy but classic, not slinky but modest, Not matronly nor promy nor brides maidish. A beautiful gown that is one of a kind. It was a perfect fit and did not need to be shortened or altered in anyway. Most formals her size are too short for her tall slender figure. This dress was longer than normal and perfect for her. The dress had been created and then tinted a subtle “Alice Blue,” some layers took the color while other remained white creating a soft and airy look. The bodice and sleeves are embroidered with soft blue flowers, and bead work. The edge of the bodice was scalloped with the satin embroidered flower edges. The dress was discounted to less than 25% of its original price, yes, that is 75% off! It cost me $1 more than my wedding dress did 30 years ago. I could not have bought the fabric for what I paid for it. The blue of the dress works well with her deep blue eyes. We had both prayed about finding a dress, she felt God had it designed for her.

Feast for the Heart

Tonight Julia and I attended a free lecture at the BYU MOA (Museum of Art). We attended a lecture: Post-resurrection Appearances of Christ by Richard Draper. He quoted some King James Bible verses and illuminated them with the Greek. I enjoy looking up the Hebrew and Greek. Richard Draper spoke current Christian theologians thought and compared them to what the scriptures actually say. The lecture was enlightening.

After the lecture we availed ourselves of the wonderful exhibits. We started by a long wall that was a time line of Art through Revolutionary time , I loved seeing the art along side the events of history, it gave perspective. We viewed the quiet landscapes of William Post. We went through the Beholding Salvation: Images of Christ Exhibit, which was very inspiring to see the variety and depth of artistic expression, With Karl Bloch paintings, Rembrandt etchings, sculptures, and illuminated manuscripts. After that we went through Paths of Impressionism: French and American landscape Paintings. Then we ended with American Dreams: Selected Works from the Museum’s Permanent Collection of American Art.

I must tell you that my focus in college was drawing and painting, landscape and still life. Though I ended focusing on art glass. I feel my paint calling me. Everything in its time…I have a list of books to write, paintings to paint, glass art to create, etc. This is my season to write. Ah, but before summer arrives in full, I know my sketchbook will surface.

Last, both my daughter and I enjoyed the soft colors and simple lines of the gallery walls, the unity of the Post collection, but most especially the writing on the walls. They had beautiful calligraphy done in vinyl lettering and placed on the walls—thoughts, scriptures, quotes. I have loved it since I saw it at Orem artist– Al Young’s home.

Today I have a colloquia on The Two Towers. More later. I am off to study.

I started off my day with Mosiah 1.

Then I read and annotated the last 225 pages of the Two Towers by Tolkein.

Just in time, as I finished the last word, my youth arrived and we had a very good colloquium. It is amazing the depth that these youth see and learn! I had dinner cooking in the oven so we could all leave to our activities on time.

When my youth class ended, I had my ewi class. Tonight was about selling things on ebay. Since my class was a teleconference I set up the computer on my bed, muted the phone and put it on speaker and started preparing for tonight. I watched the screen and listened to the coach, while I was putting on my makeup and curling my hair. I learned a lot from class. Then it was dinner time. After dinner I dressed and headed to the Provo Temple to pick up Julia. Roger dropped her off to participate in initiatory ordinances, while I was having my teleconference. After picking up Julia we headed for the MOA…

Journey to Zion:
I Studied Mosiah 1 today. I have so far walked 12 miles on my new journey. I just need to do the LSD Classics reading. That will come.

Friends,

About 1700 hits a week, 47,000 in the last year and 7000 from unique IP addresses. Yet, only a few comment. Some privately email me. I wonder what people are thinking. Do they agree? Disagree? Shake their head? Pray from me? Laugh? Cry? Why do you come back?

Preparing for Easter

Filed under: Tradition — Donna at 11:48 am on Tuesday, March 27, 2007

This morning at breakfast we were discussing family traditions. I realized I needed to get the things out and ready for our Easter tradtions.

Tradtion one: I have a notebook of pictures, songs, and stories depicting Christs’s Story, told through scripture.
There are 19 stories to read over the next 13 days, wonderful devotionals!
1– A page full of the names by which Christ is known in the scriptuers.
2-3–Triumphal Entry by Anderson Mattew 21:1-11
4-5 –The Last Supper by Carl Boch, Luke 22:10-20
6-7– Jesus Washing the Apostle’s Feet, John 13:4-6, 17
8-9 — Praying in Gethemane Matthew 26:36-39; Luke 22:43-44; Matthew 26:40-45
10-11 –Betrayal of Jesus
12-13–Peter’s denial
14-15–The Crucifixtion
16-17–Jesus’ Tomb
18-19– Burial of Jesus
20-21–Resurrected Jesus Christ
22-23–Mary and the Resurrected Lord
24-25–Jesus shows His Wounds
26-27–Go Ye Therefore
28-29–The Ascension
30-31–Jesus Teaching in the Western Hemisphere
31-32– Jesus Healing the Nephites
33-34–Jesus Praying with the Nephites
35-36–The Second Coming, Doctrine and Covenants 88:96-98
37-38 Song Lists with music from the Children’s Song Book and the LDS Hymbook

I am thinking of adding picture’s and stories depicting Christ’s post mortal ministry, His appearance in the Sacred Grove, In the Kirtland Temple, etc. I also want to add to the music.

Tradtion Two: The Easter Basket– Snows are expected today and my husband had asked me to bring the beautiful daffodils inside, last night, as they will be destroyed by the coming storm. I have a tall glass cylinderical vase on my mantel with a lavendar basket next to it. I will go to Target and get some eggs and grass to place in it. On Easter Sunday we will have our Easter Activity after church. We will pass the basket and open each egg and review the life and resurrection of Christ. Each egg has a different scripture and an item that depict Christ’s Story, the last one is empty. (using small peices and strips of of each item)
Egg 1–Matthew 26:14-15 and a silver coin
Egg 2–Matthew 26:39 a sacrament cup
Egg 3–Matthew 17:1-2 a peice of rope
Egg 4–Matthew 27:24-26 peice of soap
Egg 5–Matthew 27:28-30 peice of red fabric and rose thorns
Egg 6–Matthew 17:31-32 nails
Egg 7–Matthew 27:35-36 dice
Egg 8–Matthew 27:50-51,54 soil (because of the earthquake)
Egg 9–Matthew 27:58-60 white linen
Egg 10–Matthew 27:60, 65-66 a stone
Egg 11–Mark 16:1 spices
Egg 12–Matthew 28:6 empty, except for the scripture strip for the tomb was empty!

Tradition Three: We have a family dinner, grandma usually comes, sometimes extended family, or close friends. We do the egg lesson with our guests.

Tradition four: Spring egg hunt. Eggs have symbolic meaning, as the ancient Israelites were freed from bondage, and Christ was freed from the tomb, and we are made free in Christ and become new creatures in Him, so it is with the egg as a symbol. We get Jelly Bellies and peanut M&Ms and hide them in plain site, along picture frames on books and along piano keys, and the youngest children get to start first and we have things up high for the older ones, we do this on Saturday.
I also boil eggs to go in green salad, and make a potato salad.

New Habits Take Time to Establish

On Sunday I walked with Julia and the children, then with Roger, and then with Julia again. Much talking and discussing issues at hand. each loop was about 20 minutes and covered 1.5 miles. Miles pass when in deep conversation. I did not read chapters but scriptures on baptism. I also worked on my Lamkin-Lucas genealogy lines.

Monday I walked with Julia and the children, then with Roger. Much talking and discussing issues at hand. Each loop was about 20 minutes and covered 1.5 miles. Miles pass when in deep conversation. I studied Omni. I also worked on my Lamkin-Lucas genealogy lines.

Looks like I need to read some LDS classics! Ah, but today I am working on …The Two Towers…

Revisiting My Journey to Zion

Filed under: Journey to Zion — Donna at 9:02 am on Monday, March 26, 2007

OK I revisited my Journey to Zion Challenge that I created for my school, oops, it seems that the long cold winter did me in. Apparently, my desire for self preservation kept me inside most of the time, where it was nice and cozy. It seems that I have a lot of work before me, if I intend to do this, and I want to. Below, you will find what I had designed. You will see that it is a journey of becoming. If I am going to blog my journey, I may have to go back and reconsider the categories and re-categorize my entries, for easier access. That won’t happen until summer, but it can be improved from this time forward.

Journey to Zion Challenge

Journey to Zion Challenge

The Journey to Zion Challenge is different from the mileage from Nauvoo to Orem. When Saints eventually return to the center place, they will be gathering to Jackson County. Right now Zion is where they live and we are gathering into stakes. This Journey to Zion challenge is a spiritual journey of the heart. I have tried to parallel the outward journey with an inward journey, and have paired them with a mental journey. It is 1113 miles from my home in Orem to the visitor’s Center in Independence, Missouri. We plan to walk that distance in Utah County (or wherever you might live).

I. The physical journey:
• Begin a regular walking program and keep a log, the goal is 1113 miles.
• Alternative points can be earned by weight training or through an exercise program like Pilates or yoga. You can earn 2 miles for every 30 minute workout.
• You have to bike ride 3 miles for every mile walked.

II. The spiritual journey:
• For each mile walked, read one page of scripture.
• Keep a written record of impressions to do good, and act on them.
• Temple work, Family and Personal History Work, or LDS FamilyName Extraction work. At least once a week.
• Memorize a verse of scripture a week that is meaningful to you, during the duration of your walking portion of your Journey to Zion.

III. The mental journey:
• Read a page of LDS classics for every mile walked, this could include biographies, historical, and doctrinal works.
• Write a short essay on each book read.

IV. Becoming prepared:
• Set goal-getters in each area of personal and family preparedness to help bring you to a better prepared state.
• When one goal getter is complete, set another goal getter, until you have completed the 1113 mile journey.

V. Keep a journal or notebook of your journey.

VI. When you have completed the journey, write a summary of how the journey has changed your life and benefitted you and email the summary to the academy.

• I have made a my log chart to keep track of progress. Those desiring a copy of the log format, please email me.

Taxes…

Filed under: Journey to Zion — Donna at 8:33 am on Monday, March 26, 2007

Today, I need to work on my taxes so I can take that mindshare off my plate.

I studied Omni this morning. I am off for my walk, oooo shame on me, I have not been keeping track of the miles! How on earth will I know when I have covered the distance to Zion? At the rate I am walking now, I could reach my goal in a month and a half. Ok, I am delusional if I think that. I forgot how many miles it is. It will take me a lot longer. But that is good. Perhaps I can make it by fall snow fall!

Later Note:
Looks like Taxes will have to wait for Friday.
